They are the gooey product of Tom Spring's fertile imagination and could soon be the toy every child is pestering their parents for.

Yesterday, Putty Monsters were unleashed for the first time on a class of children from the young inventor's home village of Rothley.

As previously reported in the Leicester Mercury, the 13-yearold beat 1,200 people in a competition to design a new toy for an internet retailer.

Putty Monsters - bug-eyed aliens which can be molded into many shapes - were unveiled to guinea pigs from Rothley Church of England Primary School.

P L AY I N G Tom, who attends Stonehill High School, in Birstall, and hopes to make a career in toy design, said he was delighted the toy was well received. He said: "It's simple idea and it's fun so hopefully people will like playing with them."

Ten year-old Jake Pate, from Rothley, said: "It's brilliant. You can create absolutely any shape. It's really impressive."

Zoe Gough, 10, also from Rothley, said: "I think they are great. I like the colours and that you can just squidge them."

Firebox, the internet company which turned Tom's idea into a reality, have had a first batch of 3,000 Putty Monsters made and hope they will be a must-have Christmas craze.

Each toy is Pounds 9.99 and Tom stands to get 50% of the profits.

Tom said: "I'm very happy with the Putty Monsters but my computer is full of many more ideas for the future."

Tom's father, Gary, said he was very proud of his son.

He said: "Tom's always been very creative and has always stretched his imagination.'' Firebox spokeswoman Claire Wood said: "The monsters come in five colours and we hope that they will be swapped.

"We also hope that kids will give their monsters a name and download pictures of them on to a Facebook page where they can share modelling tips." Tom's creation was inspired by his grandfather, Les Cooke, a former marketing director for county toy-maker Palitoy.

The youngster said: "I really look up to my grandad. We always talk about how I can get my designs made and into shops. It's been a dream of mine for as long as I can remember."
