Christie's appraisers on the h

Watch appraiser Doug Escribano from the Christie's auction house in New York City will be Downtown on Tuesday and Wednesday looking for timepieces to consign for sale.

But he admits many of the watch owners who schedule an appraisal are simply trying to find out how much that suspected heirloom really is worth.

"Pittsburgh is a new (appraisal) venue for us, and they are good, because many times, people have watches and have no idea how valuable they can be."

The watches tend to be those from makers such as Sexy Camisoles Patek Phillipe, Panerai, Rolex and Vacheron Constantin, but also can be mechanical marvels from several hundred years ago, he says

Christie's auctions watches at four major sales a year: in Dubai, New York City, Hong Kong and Geneva. In 2009, he says, the firm sold $88 million in watches at those events.

Many times, he says, people with $300,000 watches know they have an expensive possession, but there are many others who have no idea of their worth.

He says those less costly watches can end up not being worth consigning for auction. Because of insurance and auctioning fees, the net profit could make the sale fruitless.

"I would hate to take a watch and have someone end up with a check for $450," he says.

At past appraisals, Escribano has found watches that have sold for more than $700,000, but even that is not extraordinarily high. Watches upward of $1 million are not unusual, and Christie's has sold one for $4 million.

The appraisals will be 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday and 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Wednesday at the Residences Sales Center of Howard Hanna Real Estate. Hanna is a partner of Christie's Great Estates, which is a subsidiary of Christie's. The sales center is at Two PNC Plaza, Downtown.
