MUM SOLD DRUG TO PAY FOR CHRIS

A PLYMOUTH mum dealt in cocaine to try to raise cash to buy Christmas presents for her kids, a court heard.

St Budeaux mother of two Kelly Edwards, aged 28, admitted two charges of possession of a Class A drug with intent to supply after 12 grams of cocaine, worth about Pounds 125, were found in her handbag.

Prosecutor Jo Martin said Edwards was caught in a police raid on an address in Barne Barton on December 2 last year.

She said that police seized Edwards' mobile phone, and found evidence that she had recently sent text mes-sageto six numbers saying 'Got stuff if needed.' A number of replies included slang references to cocaine, Ms Martin told the court.

She added: "During the search she made a number of comments like 'I only did it for Christmas presents for the kids', and 'I lost my hours [at work] and someone gave me a chance'," she said.

"She was left having to pay the bills and meet the debts which were jointly accrued, and maliciously accrued, towards the end of the relationship," he said.

"Having lost some hours of work and with Christmas approaching, she became vulnerable. She succumbed to temptation."

Mr Beal said Edwards had not managed to make any money by dealing in the drug.

Edwards appeared in court with a suitcase and Mr Beal said she had made arrangements for her children to be cared for by family members.

Jailing Edwards for one year, Judge Francis Gilbert QC told her it was the shortest possible sentence he could pass, which he was doing for the sake of her two daughters, aged 11 and six.

He said: "Class A drugs are a serious scourge."

Edwards, of Ark Royal Close, denied that the Pounds 715 cash she was carrying at the time of the raid was the proceeds of crime.

Although no separate charge was brought, Judge Gilbert ordered that the cash should be forfeited.
